Guardrails • Technical specifications
Marcegaglia Buildtech guardrails are designed and built in total compliance with the relevant safety standards.
The relevant European standard EN 1317 (Road restraint systems) specifies the performance requirements for restraint systems and defines performance classes and crash test acceptance criteria, for EC performance certification.
Road safety guardrails:
PERFORMANCE CLASSES, CRASH TEST ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA, TEST METHODS IN ACCORDANCE WITH EN 1317-1 and -2
All guardrails for installation on stabilised ground, asphalt or concrete structures undergo crash tests to certify their compliance with two main prerequisites:
– light vehicles: impact absorption
– heavy vehicles: containment and redirection of vehicle
The standard establishes the following criteria for the control of test results, in order to guarantee the product’s safety.
IMPACT SEVERITY LEVEL
Severity indices must be reported for all tests with light vehicles.
All Marcegaglia Buildtech guardrails have a performance index (ASI and THIV) that guarantees the highest safety level for the vehicle occupants.
DEFORMATION OF GUARDRAIL
The parameters which define a guardrail’s deformation are its working width (W), its dynamic deflection (D) and the vehicle intrusion (Vi). The working width is the distance between the side facing the traffic before the crash and the maximum dynamic lateral position of the guardrail itself.
The dynamic deflection is the maximum lateral displacement of the guardrail facing the traffic.
The vehicle intrusion parameter measures the maximum lateral dynamic position of the vehicle.
OTHER PARAMETERS ASSESSED USING QUALITATIVE CRITERIA
– no vehicle rollover
– VCDI: Vehicle Cockpit Deformation Index
– exit trajectory inside “CEN box”
– no complete breakage of any of the main beam elements
– no intrusion into the passenger compartment
Terminals and transitions of safety guardrails:
PERFORMANCE CLASSES, CRASH TEST ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA, TEST METHODS IN ACCORDANCE WITH EN 1317-4
The terminal is the beginning and/or end section of a guardrail.
Additional parameters are also assessed, including:
– impact severity level
– deformation of extremity
– no ejection of parts
– no vehicle rollover
– exit trajectory inside “CEN box”

Product requirements and conformity evaluation:
REQUIREMENTS FOR VEHICLE CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS IN ACCORDANCE WITH EN 1317-5
To guarantee the correct performance of road safety systems, their production and installation must undergo the checks envisaged by the EN 1317-5 standard in joint use with parts 1, 2, 3 and 4.
The conformity of road containment systems with the prerequisites of the EN 1317-5 standard must comprise:
– Initial Type Testing (ITT)
– Factory Production Control (FPC)
Provided this conformity is achieved, the certifying institutions accredited by the European Union may issue the certificate of conformity which allows the application of the CE mark. The CE mark indicates that the products conform to the prerequisites of a specific harmonised standard and can circulate freely on the market of the European Union.
Guardrails for motorcyclists:
TEST METHOD IN ACCORDANCE WITH UNE 135900:2008
Marcegaglia Buildtech has developed a motorcyclist protection system which can be installed on all existing guardrails, and has subjected it to crash tests in accordance with the Spanish national standard UNE 135900, since no harmonised European standard has yet come into effect.
The test criteria for continuous systems require two launches (one on post, one in central position) of a dummy weighing about 80 kg, at an angle of 30° and at a speed of 60 km/h.
The Marcegaglia Buildtech motorcyclist protection guardrail recorded level I performance, thus providing the highest degree of protection currently available for motorcyclists’ safety.
